I will set out here what has happened recently on twitter with regards to tweet exchanges between my MP Mike Gapes (Labour, Ilford South) and myself. Just for a bit of background for those of you who are not familiar with my views: On twitter I follow very few “celebs” or “MP’s”, as I am not in favour of the support of our current economic/political system that usually emanates from these areas, however, a couple of months ago, I discovered my MP was on twitter and decided to follow him, I asked him a few questions about local issues, to which I received adequate answers, I then started to ask questions on UK/International political issues as well, and in the main received adequate answers also. (although sometimes parts of my questions were ignored and unanswered but I didn’t make a big deal out of that) Then last week sometime I was sent a link to a youtube video which showed the very graphic public murder of a black policeman in Libya, prior to this, many commentators had noted that a hardcore islamist faction (similar to Al Quada) made up a significant proportion of the NATO backed NTC “rebels” & it appeared to me as if the “ethnic cleansing” that was occurring in Libya was probably being carried out by them. So, on saturday,I decided to highlight this terrible turn of events to Mike Gapes MP on twitter (as a constituent of his, I feel I have a right to ask questions and pass on info that may be helpful in saving lives) I told Mike Gapes on twitter that it appeared as if the “rebels” had links with the ideology of Al Quaeda & were “ethnic cleansing” as they went round libya & asked what the UK gov were going to do about it? To which I received this response (which doesn’t address the issue of the “ethnic cleansing” (no surprise there) RT @MikeGapes: @m37411ic48 NTC broad mix of Libyan society secular, technocrats, young democrats, islamists No evidence Al Qaeda link its Gaddafi smear I thought little more of it, as have learnt through experience politicians usually ignore what they are unable to deal with to save face, but at least I tried to bring it to the attention of someone in a position of “responsibility” Then on Sunday evening, (after Alex Thompson had highlighted on Channel 4 news the problem of the “ethnic cleansing” taking place in libya) I noticed that Mike Gapes MP had Retweeted this, RT @AdelDarwish: Only Thompson’s @ch4news camera seems what stopped rebels shooting Nigerians mistaken 4 mercenaries. NTC must impose discipline Which I took as Mike Gapes accepting what I had told him on Saturday to be true re the racist murders happening all over Libya, so I sent him a twitter message RT @m37411ic48: @MikeGapes oh now you get it about the racism in libya, remember, I’m usually ahead of the game Which led to this reply & exchange: RT @MikeGapes: @m37411ic48 you should get out more most events are cock up not conspiracy To which I replied with RT @m37411ic48: @MikeGapes what you mean is, I told you yesterday, what you retweeted tonight, I always have evidence, I don’t do conspiracies And added RT @m37411ic48: @MikeGapes not sure your tone is entirely appropriate to one of your constituents, I make a great friend but a shit enemy (The 2nd tweet Mike Gapes retweeted immediately, (he appears to like to be portrayed as a victim as I have noticed by the style of his dealing with other constituents issues) To which I replied RT @m37411ic48: @MikeGapes notice you don’t retweet what you said to me, for perspective, typical propaganda and not fitting of someone in public office (Which he also retweeted immediately, he still even now hasn’t tweeted to his followers the “you should get out more” comment he made to me) At this point, I had already decided it was a waste of time to try and engage in political debate with my MP in the conventional way (as is promoted by the very political system he represents), as his tone made it clear to me that he had no intention of maintaining a polite MP/constituent relationship on twitter I replied to this by stating RT @m37411ic48: @MikeGapes so what have you done? Lost a source that was trying to help, oh well, point proven, your system doesn’t work To which he replied RT @MikeGapes: @m37411ic48 and your point is ? To which I replied RT @m37411ic48: @MikeGapes really, you don’t need to worry about what my points are anymore, was nice knowing my MP on twitter until tonight, goodbye At which point I blocked my MP from my own twitter stream to avoid any further confrontation, In conclusion, it would appear as if my MP would rather I “got out more” rather than embarrass him by knowing more about the situation on the ground in Libya than he does, what was declared by him on Saturday to be a “Gaddafi Smear” was by sunday apparently enough cause for concern to warrant a retweet asking for the issues of the racist murders to be addressed, bearing in mind My MP represents a very racially diverse area of East London, I’m not sure his attitude towards attempted genocide is particularly attractive & for a political system that seeks to “engage” & “represent” I find Mike Gapes attitude appalling, recently we have heard how many feel the system does nothing for them & that possibly contributed to the recent riots around the country, if everyone has a similar experience with their MP as I have, I can’t say I’m surprised and although I do not take part in the party political process myself (voting etc) I will be supporting with enthusiasm any independent candidate at the next general election who will provide a more friendly & concerned attitude towards his or her constituents.
